In a striking display of athleticism and determination, Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed at the Australian Open, has made her way into the quarterfinals, aiming for her third championship title in just four years. On Sunday, she triumphed over Canada’s No. 17 Victoria Mboko with a score of 6-1, 7-6 (1).
Sabalenka unleashed her formidable serve early on, scoring three aces in the first set alone, which allowed her to dominate the 19-year-old Canadian player in a swift 31 minutes.
However, the second set posed more challenges for Sabalenka, as she began to accumulate unforced errors. While Mboko showcased impressive skills that could have defeated many other competitors, she simply fell short against the two-time champion of the Australian Open.
After the match, the 27-year-old Sabalenka praised her young opponent during a court-side interview, saying, "What an incredible player for such a young age. It's amazing to witness these rising stars on the Tour. I can hardly believe I’m saying this; I feel like I'm still a kid myself." She acknowledged the pressure Mboko exerted on her, stating, "She pushed me so much, and I'm happy to have advanced."
At one point in the second set, Sabalenka had a commanding lead of 4-1 but faced difficulty converting three match points while ahead at 5-4. Despite Mboko regaining some momentum and pushing the match into a tiebreaker, Sabalenka ultimately dominated, marking her 20th consecutive tiebreak victory.
To maintain her performance under pressure, she explained her strategy: "I try not to focus on it being a tiebreak and play each point individually. I believe that’s the key to my consistency."
Having already claimed victory at this Grand Slam tournament in both 2023 and 2024, and finishing as runner-up last year against Madison Keys, Sabalenka is no stranger to success. Additionally, she boasts two U.S. Open titles in her career.
Later on Sunday, at the iconic Rod Laver Arena, Carlos Alcaraz, the top-seeded male player from Spain, was set to compete against the American No. 19 Tommy Paul for a coveted quarterfinal spot. Meanwhile, men's third seed Alexander Zverev and women's No. 3 seed Coco Gauff were also in action, vying for their own places in the quarterfinals.
