In a significant move, the Buffalo Bills are ramping up their search for a new head coach, and reports indicate that former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers will be interviewed for the position soon. This exciting development comes just days after the team began reaching out to potential candidates. According to sources who spoke with ESPN's Adam Schefter, Rivers, who has never held a coaching position at either the collegiate or professional level, is set to meet with the team's management in Florida on Friday. Currently, he serves as the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama.
Rivers, who hung up his cleats after a single season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, made headlines when he returned to the field last December to help the Colts after starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles tendon. During that brief stint, Rivers played in three games; however, the Colts were unable to secure a win, leading to their early exit from playoff contention.
Buffalo’s current quarterback, Josh Allen, has been actively involved in the coaching interviews thus far, and this trend appears likely to continue. He expressed his admiration for Rivers' return to the game, stating, "[Rivers' return is] really cool. I didn't know what to expect, obviously, when he came back, but it's really awesome. Just the way that he's gone back out there. He was deciphering that defense extremely well and making some plays for his team, and it was inspiring to watch."
Historically speaking, the transition from player to head coach is quite rare in the NFL. The Elias Sports Bureau highlights that since 1950, only one individual has made this leap: Hall of Famer Norm Van Brocklin. After concluding his 12-year playing career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1960, Van Brocklin took on the role of head coach for the Minnesota Vikings during their inaugural season in 1961, finishing that year with a 3-11 record.
At the age of 44, Rivers boasts an impressive 18-season tenure in the NFL, predominantly with the San Diego Chargers, where he spent 16 years. Interestingly, his last playoff appearance was against the Bills during the 2020 season, culminating in a narrow 27-24 defeat.
The Bills' general manager, Brandon Beane, has emphasized that the organization is committed to conducting a thorough and transparent search process. They have already interviewed notable candidates such as Joe Brady, who served as offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll, a former offensive coordinator for the Bills and head coach of the New York Giants, and Lou Anarumo, the defensive coordinator for the Colts.
