Dr. Danielle Adewusi, a medical doctor, model, public speaker, and Miss Universe Nigeria contestant, is on a mission to reclaim the title her mother won 35 years ago. In this exclusive interview, she shares her journey, the legacy she aims to continue, and her vision for using the pageant platform to amplify women's health issues.
A Legacy in the Making
Danielle's childhood was steeped in the world of pageantry, thanks to her mother's Miss Universe Nigeria win. However, her focus was always on excelling in school and becoming a doctor. It was during medical school that she realized her passions weren't mutually exclusive. Writing down her aspirations, she discovered they all pointed towards one identity: Miss Universe.
"I saw the platform for what it truly is: an opportunity to represent my country while championing women's health and creating meaningful change for women and girls in Nigeria and beyond," she explains.
Dealing with Legacy Pressure
Despite the weight of her mother's legacy, Danielle approaches her Miss Universe Nigeria 2026 journey with confidence and faith. "I have complete confidence in God's plan for my life because I have seen His faithfulness at every stage of my journey," she says.
"Faith without works is dead, so I work hard, stay committed, and give my best," she continues. "I believe that what God has ordained doesn't have to be forced. That gives me a real sense of peace." Instead of worrying about living up to her mother's success, Danielle trusts that God has prepared her for this moment.
Pageantry and Women's Health Advocacy
Danielle's decision to enter Miss Universe Nigeria is deeply intertwined with her mission in medicine and advocacy. "Pageantry provides a platform to amplify the work I’m already doing," she states.
Her focus on women's health is multifaceted. "I believe women's health is at the centre of many of the social issues and injustices women face," she says. "I want to use the platform to make women's health impossible to ignore."
Educating and Empowering
Danielle's approach to women's health advocacy is rooted in education and addressing healthcare barriers. "Education is the foundation because women cannot advocate for their health if they don’t know what is normal, what isn’t, or when to seek medical attention," she explains.
She also emphasizes the importance of understanding the cultural, social, and economic factors that shape women's health. "Providing truly equitable care requires more than clinical knowledge; it demands an understanding of the cultural, social, and economic factors that shape a woman's health and her ability to access care," she adds.
Scrub The Stigma: A Personal Project
Danielle's Scrub The Stigma foundation is a testament to her commitment to women's health. "I didn’t set out to start a charity," she says. "Scrub The Stigma began as a fundraising event while I was at medical school, raising money for organizations supporting women affected by domestic abuse, female genital mutilation, and acid attacks."
The foundation's educational programs, like the Educate Lagos initiative, have been instrumental in empowering girls and women. "Our recent Educate Lagos programme was truly unforgettable," she recalls.
Music's Influence
Danielle's classical music training has shaped her discipline and creativity in medicine and advocacy. "Being classically trained teaches you that there are no shortcuts," she says. "It requires discipline, consistency, patience, and humility; qualities that have shaped every aspect of my life."
Music has also taught her that there isn't always one "right" way to make an impact. "Two musicians can perform the same piece beautifully yet interpret it differently," she explains. "Your individuality is one of your greatest strengths."
A Global Vision
Looking ahead, Danielle envisions herself as a global champion for women's health. "My long-term vision is to become a global champion for women's health, using medicine, advocacy, and public platforms to improve the lives of women and girls on a much larger scale," she states.
She hopes to be in the rooms where key decisions are made, working alongside governments and global organizations to shape policies and conversations that improve women's health outcomes. "Lasting change requires both grassroots action and systems-level leadership, and I hope to contribute meaningfully to both," she concludes.
