Imagine embarking on a train journey that evokes the enchanting magic of the Hogwarts Express, complete with breathtaking views that unfold before your eyes.
As I gently close my eyes and let the hustle and bustle of London’s Euston train station fade away, an exhilarating adventure is just beginning. Upon finally opening my eyes and raising the window blind, I am greeted by a stunning panorama of lush rolling hills, vibrant trees, and a brilliant blue sky—nature’s perfect postcard.
The Caledonian Sleeper has performed its overnight enchantment, whisking me away to Fort William, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, within a mere 12 hours. But this isn’t just any ride; it’s truly an extraordinary experience from start to finish.
My journey began even before I set foot on the train at Euston, where I found myself unwinding in a chic lounge, indulging in complimentary drinks and delightful chocolate brownies—pure bliss!
Once aboard, the inviting atmosphere struck me immediately. The train’s corridors, adorned with forest-green walls and lush carpets, led me to my cozy cabin—a space that truly mirrors the magical feel of Harry Potter’s iconic Hogwarts Express.
Inside my en-suite Club cabin, a comfortable bunk bed welcomed me, complete with a soft duvet, reading light, charging points, and all the essentials one might need for a restful night’s sleep, including an eye mask, earplugs, and bottled water. Every detail was thoughtfully designed for practicality—there was even a full-length mirror on the back of the door and a cleverly placed sink beneath the window.
The en-suite bathroom, equipped with both a toilet and shower, elevated the cabin experience to that of a hotel on wheels. As a guest in a Club cabin, I also gained access to the Club Car—a beautifully decorated dining area featuring tartan placemats that symbolize the various stations served by the Sleeper.
For dinner, I savored a delightful three-course meal, starting with a salmon quiche priced at £8, followed by a mouthwatering harissa-and-honey chicken dish for £14, and finishing off with a salted caramel tart costing £10. To accompany my meal, a wide selection of beverages was available, ranging from artisanal gins to classic wines.
Later, snug under my covers, I felt the gentle sway of the train as I drifted into sleep, aided by my eye mask and earplugs. But the true enchantment of this journey reveals itself the next morning.
Awakening to the sunny Scottish landscape, with majestic mountains and shimmering lochs gliding past my window, was an unforgettable experience. Slipping into my slippers, I made my way back to the Club Car, where I was once again mesmerized by the expansive glass windows that provided a breathtaking view of the glorious Scottish countryside.
Though the cost of traveling by train is higher than flying, who wouldn’t prefer to exchange the stress of airport logistics for the serene beauty of waking up surrounded by nature? The morning menu offered an impressive array of options—from warm pastries to a hearty full Scottish breakfast, alongside fresh juices and an assortment of hot drinks. The fluffy pancakes topped with fresh fruit left me satisfyingly full as I marveled at the stunning scenery outside.
The Caledonian Sleeper operates several routes from Euston, including destinations like Edinburgh and Glasgow, and recently expanded its services to include Birmingham for the very first time.
For those considering this unique travel option, a solo traveler can expect to pay around £200 for a Club en-suite room one way, or approximately £280 if sharing with another person. For those looking for more budget-friendly alternatives, classic cabins and seats are available starting at about £50 per person. For more information, visit sleeper.scot.
