Hospital-Acquired RSV in Children: High Mortality Rates & What Parents Need to Know (2026)

A Hidden Threat to Our Youngest Patients: Hospital-Acquired RSV

Imagine a scenario where a child, already vulnerable due to hospitalization, faces an additional, often overlooked danger - a respiratory virus acquired within the very walls of the hospital. This is the reality of Hospital-Acquired Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HA-RSV), a silent killer that has been hiding in plain sight.

HA-RSV has long been an under-recognized menace, but recent research published in Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses has shed new light on its impact. The study reveals a startling truth: HA-RSV is responsible for a significant portion of RSV-related illnesses and, more alarmingly, carries a much higher mortality rate than its community-acquired counterpart.

"HA-RSV has been reported to cause a fifth of all RSV-related deaths worldwide, but the true extent of its impact was unclear," explained the study authors. "We aimed to estimate the incidence and global burden of HA-RSV to better understand this threat."
