Learner Tien, the young gun who stunned everyone by defeating Daniil Medvedev at the 2025 Australian Open, has joined forces with the legendary Michael Chang as his coach. This pairing is already making waves, and here's why.
Last year, 20-year-old Tien had a breakout season, rocketing up the rankings to reach world No. 26. He even snagged his first ATP title and dominated the Next Generation ATP Finals, a showcase for the sport's future stars.
Tien is thrilled with his progress, especially achieving his goal of winning a title before turning 20. He also credits his second-round victory over Medvedev as a pivotal moment, a grueling match that lasted nearly five hours.
"That match actually got me into the Top 100. I started to feel more and more like I belonged," Tien, who has Vietnamese heritage, shared. He's now gearing up for his first-round match against Marcos Giron.
Chang, a former world No. 2 and the youngest man to win a singles major (the 1989 French Open), is optimistic about Tien's potential. He believes the sky's the limit for his protégé.
"If you look at this past year, Learner’s beaten more Top 10 guys than anybody else apart from Carlos [Alcaraz] and Jannik [Sinner]," Chang said, emphasizing the impact Tien has made.
Chang added, "When you’ve beaten Top 10 guys… that should give you some confidence." He believes in Tien's game and sees immense room for growth.
But here's where it gets controversial... Chang's belief in Tien's potential and his ability to compete with top players is clear, but does this necessarily translate into Grand Slam success?
The duo's paths crossed in Hong Kong, and their partnership blossomed from there. Chang highlights their shared background, which helps them connect on a deeper level.
"Some aspects (of our relationship and similarities) makes it a little bit easier. We can talk about things that are in Orange County. He knows what I’m talking about, and I know what he’s talking about," Chang said.
Chang also notes Tien's thoughtful approach to the game.
"Learner’s very cerebral, so he’s a thinker out there (on the court), which is very similar to how my mind works." Chang appreciates that Tien is receptive to his advice.
And this is the part most people miss... Tien wasn't even born when Chang retired in 2003. Their relationship is a testament to the timeless nature of the sport. Tien's agent played a key role in connecting him with Chang, and Tien believes it's been a perfect fit.
