In a groundbreaking discovery, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has unveiled substantial untapped reserves of oil and gas located within the Woodford and Barnett shales of the Permian Basin. This assessment reveals an impressive estimate of 28.3 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas and 1.6 billion barrels of oil, underscoring the significant potential these formations hold for the energy sector.
According to the USGS report released on Tuesday, the estimated natural gas reserves are sufficient to fuel the entire United States for around ten months based on current consumption levels. Meanwhile, the oil reserves could provide the nation with a supply that lasts approximately ten weeks. The geological formations in question lie at depths reaching up to 20,000 feet beneath the Earth's surface, making them deeper than many other resources found in the Permian Basin. Since drilling operations started in the late 1990s, these shales have already produced an astonishing total of 26 million barrels of oil—equivalent to just one day's worth of oil consumption in the U.S.
The ability to access these previously unreachable deposits is largely thanks to advancements in extraction technologies.
