Medicinal Mushrooms in Skincare: The Ultimate Guide to This Growing Trend (2026)

Ready to uncover a beauty secret that's been quietly brewing? Medicinal mushrooms are making a splash, blurring the lines between health and skincare, and it's more than just a fleeting trend. Brands are increasingly incorporating these fungi into their formulas, promising a holistic approach to beauty.

While the use of medicinal mushrooms in skincare has been around for years in some parts of the world, it's a relatively new and exciting development in places like Israel.

Idan Bar-Shalit, training manager for Origins, a brand with a 20-year-old mushroom-based product line called Mega-Mushroom, explains, "As research grows, companies are realizing the power of mushrooms." He adds, "They're well-known in dietary supplements, but their impact on skin appearance is gaining recognition, leading to their crossover into cosmetics."

Origins' Mega-Mushroom line was born in 2005 through a collaboration with Dr. Andrew Weil, a physician specializing in integrative medicine. Dr. Weil, considered a mushroom guru, believes inflammation is the root of many health issues. His approach emphasizes calming inflammation through nutrition, hydration, and inner peace, with cosmetic products aiding in external skin treatment.

Tal Weiman, vice president of marketing at MycoSpring, a company involved in mushroom development, cultivation, and enhancement, notes a rising awareness of medicinal mushroom benefits. He attributes this to a more conscious consumer culture and the stress-filled lives many lead. People are seeking natural, high-quality solutions, and this trend is evident in the beauty world.

MycoSpring recently launched a skincare brand called SENE, which features products enriched with the cordyceps mushroom. This brand evolved from a therapeutic cream developed by Rea Sofer, the company's founder. After struggling with skin irritation, Sofer experimented with cordyceps extract, finding it provided relief.

But here's where it gets controversial... While mushrooms in skincare aren't entirely new globally, their use has been somewhat marginal. However, SENE aims to change that. Weiman explains, "We know the qualities and benefits of medicinal mushrooms, and we want to make them accessible at the skincare level."

So, what makes these mushrooms so special?

Medicinal mushrooms contain potent active compounds that support the body and skin. They're rich in antioxidants, polysaccharides, and adaptogens, helping the skin cope with stress, pollution, dryness, and hormonal changes.

  • Cordyceps: An extraordinary antioxidant and moisturizer, suitable for all skin types.
  • Reishi: Known as the 'mushroom of immortality,' it combats irritation, strengthens the skin barrier, and soothes.
  • Fermented Chaga: Known as the 'queen of mushrooms,' it fights environmental damage and prevents skin irritation.

And this is the part most people miss... Weiman concludes, "The boundaries between internal health and external care are blurring." People are seeking a holistic approach, moving away from 'anti-aging' mindsets to 'prejuvenation,' focusing on prevention and preservation. Mushrooms are seen as a preventive solution for maintaining health and vitality, and this is being applied to skincare to prevent aging and improve skin appearance.
