In a 2024 speech, Connolly not only insulted the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, but also made highly controversial claims about First Nations people and their role in crime.
Connolly, who is set to become King Charles' representative in the territory, has sparked intense scrutiny and debate. His past social media posts, now deleted, have come to light, revealing a pattern of controversial opinions. In one post, he made a joke about domestic violence, targeting the Greens, while another post accused First Nations people of arson, suggesting they were responsible for bushfires.
The administrator's role is meant to be impartial, but Connolly's outspoken nature and critical stance towards politicians and policies have raised concerns. Geoffrey Watson, director of the Centre for Public Integrity, urged the government to reconsider the appointment, stating that Connolly's views could undermine the position's integrity.
Adding to the controversy is a speech from the NT Cattlemen's Association conference in 2024, where Connolly lashed out at "left-wing" activists, environmentalists, and the voice referendum. He also heavily criticized Labor politicians, particularly Albanese, accusing him of lying about respecting all citizens. Connolly described Albanese's campaign for a First Nations voice as "arrogant, ignorant, threatening, and wrong."
Connolly attributed the territory's crime problems to "soft Labor party policies on crime" and a "weak judiciary." He went on to claim that the "main group" responsible for criminal actions were First Nations people, stating that they were the product of failed policies and a soft approach to crime. This statement has caused an uproar and sparked a debate about the role of history and policy in crime.
Lia Finocchiaro, the Country Liberal chief minister who nominated Connolly, has defended her choice. However, Selena Uibo, the NT Labor leader, believes the government should reconsider, stating that Connolly's public comments raise serious questions about his ability to represent all Territorians with integrity and political neutrality.
Despite the growing controversy, Connolly has remained silent on the matter, and reports suggest his social media accounts were deleted after journalists began inquiring. In a recent interview, he stated that he would not express political opinions publicly, but added that he is entitled to his own views.
