Queensland Floods: Devastating Impact on Livestock and Communities (2026)

Flood warnings persist in Queensland as stock losses soar past 100,000

The central Queensland region remains under active flood warnings, with the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Koji still causing widespread flooding. The Premier met with graziers on Sunday to address the devastating stock losses, which are expected to exceed 100,000.

Initial estimates from a disaster impact survey revealed 68,700 stock losses in the state's northwest, but authorities anticipate a much higher figure. Premier David Crisafulli, speaking at Julia Creek, predicted the final tally would reach over 100,000 and warned that the full extent of the losses would become apparent in the coming weeks, with some remote areas still isolated.

He emphasized the need for improved infrastructure, stating, 'We have to do better with roads and key transport links.' Mr. Crisafulli also highlighted a recurring mistake, as the state has consistently failed to rebuild to higher standards.

Communities across central and northwest Queensland remain on high alert as river systems continue to respond to heavy rainfall. Residents are urged to stay informed about warnings and avoid floodwaters. Rockhampton, in particular, is bracing for a 'moderate' flood peak on Wednesday, with the Fitzroy River expected to rise to 7 meters on Monday and peak at a moderate level below 8 meters.

Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore warns of potential home, property, and business inundations in low-lying areas outside the town and upstream. Despite the moderate flood warning, the impact is expected to be significant.

The weather bureau forecasts possible showers and thunderstorms at the start of the week, which could cause further rises in the catchment but are unlikely to significantly affect the Fitzroy River levels. Two Watch and Act warnings are in place for low-lying areas in the Rockhampton region, including Depot Hill, Port Curtis, Fairy Bower, Lakes Creek, Koongal, Berserker, Park Avenue, and Pink Lily. Further north, warnings are active for Yaamba, Glenlee, Glendale, Belmont, Etna Creek, and Nerimbera in the Livingstone region.

Sandbagging sites are available, and the local disaster management group is urging residents to stay informed. Rockhampton's deputy mayor, Drew Wickerson, advises residents to remain calm but alert, emphasizing the resilience of the community and the need to check on neighbors.

The city's most recent major flood in April 2017 reached 8.90 meters, while the record flood in January 1918 peaked at 10.11 meters. The airport closes at 8.80 meters, and this flood is not expected to impact flights.

Racecourse Affected by Flooding

On Sunday morning, Rockhampton's Callaghan Park racecourse was already experiencing flooding, prompting local trainers to evacuate horses. Trainer Alisha Taylor described the situation, stating, 'The flood is rising, so we all need to get out. This area will be underwater, so we're packing up and heading to the Sunny Coast.' The move is costly and challenging, requiring the relocation of equipment and the entire business.
