Sunderland's Predicted Lineup: 4 Changes for the Crystal Palace Clash (2026)

Anticipation is in the air as Sunderland prepares to face Crystal Palace, with some intriguing changes expected in the starting lineup. After fielding a stronger squad than anticipated against Everton, it became clear that several players who took the field might not typically be in the manager's preferred starting group if everyone were fit and ready to go. This situation highlights the remarkable depth of talent within the team. Players like Luke O’Nien, Dennis Cirkin, Elezier Mayenda, and Romaine Mundle delivered impressive performances, showcasing their readiness to seize opportunities when they arise. However, this has also presented manager Le Bris with some challenging decisions, especially considering Traore’s injury. New recruit Ta Bi will not participate, and neither will Chemsdine Talbi and Habib Diarra, as both are currently engaged in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Here is my prediction for how the team might line up today.

Goalkeeper: Robin Roefs

Following his outstanding performance in the penalty shootout, Robin Roefs will once again be the goalkeeper today. This young talent continues to impress with his well-rounded capabilities. His development has been nothing short of remarkable, and he will be eager to replicate his strong form in today's match.

Defenders: Nordi Mukiele, Dan Ballard, Omar Alderete, Reinildo

With the squad back to full strength in defense, players like Hume, Cirkin, O’Nien, and Geertruida will be hoping for a chance to play. When the team is at full fitness, selection becomes a matter of elimination. Reinildo stands out as a quality player; while Cirkin has proven himself capable of competing at the Premier League level, Reinildo currently brings an added edge. He appeared upbeat in the recent training video released by the club, suggesting he is set to return to the starting lineup. If fit, Ballard will start, which he appears to be, and Mukiele is practically irreplaceable in our setup. This leaves one position open for Alderete—despite a lackluster performance against Brentford, he has displayed commendable form throughout most of the season, making him a valuable asset for our defensive balance.

Midfielders: Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fee

It was a delightful surprise to see Noah Sadiki teaming up with Xhaka and Le Fee last weekend. He fitted right back into the game as if he had never stepped away, demonstrating just how much we had missed his presence over recent weeks. I am excited to watch him play again this afternoon. Alongside him, Granit Xhaka and Enzo Le Fee both delivered excellent displays against Everton. The upcoming match next weekend will be even more interesting when Diarra returns to the squad, creating a wonderful dilemma for the manager!

Forwards: Elezier Mayenda, Brian Brobbey, Romaine Mundle

There's been speculation regarding Romaine Mundle's future, but his performance against Everton certainly made a case for him to remain a part of the squad. While his ability to outmaneuver defenders can be inconsistent, he is known for his direct style and eagerness to take shots—qualities that have been somewhat lacking this season. Given his strong showing last weekend, I believe he will retain his spot today as he aims to solidify his position before Talbi's return. On the opposite flank, I anticipate that Mayenda will start, having impressed during his substitution against Brentford and performing well centrally against Everton. As for Brobbey, he is expected to lead the attack after being substituted as a precaution in the previous match.
