A recent makeover at the iconic Kennedy Center has sparked a wave of ridicule aimed at Donald Trump. The center's new look, a result of Trump's administration's overhaul, has inadvertently transformed the building into a colorful canvas that resembles the flag of another nation.
The Washington Post reported that the Kennedy Center's exterior now boasts a vibrant red, white, and blue lighting scheme, a move that has left many staffers chuckling, as it evokes the flag of France rather than the intended American spirit. This color palette is shared by several other countries, including the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Croatia, and Thailand, but perhaps most notably, it aligns with Russia, given Trump's well-documented affinity for its authoritarian leader.
Trump's MAGA agenda took control of the Kennedy Center swiftly after his second term began, as part of a broader mission to eradicate what he perceived as a "woke" bias within the institution. He installed himself as the new chair of the board, with Richard Grenell, a long-time ally, as president, and First Lady Melania Trump as honorary chair. The board also includes loyalists like Attorney General Pam Bondi and Fox News hosts Laura Ingraham and Maria Bartiromo.
In addition to the controversial lighting scheme, Trump has initiated a $257 million renovation project for the center. The Hall of Nations now displays portraits of the first and second couples: Donald and Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance and Usha Vance.
The most significant and polarizing change under the second MAGA administration has been the shift in the center's programming. Since January, there has been a notable increase in right-leaning and Christian-oriented events, as reported by the WaPo. Fees have also been reduced or waived for organizations that align with the president's agenda.
On Friday, the center hosted a ceremony where FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Trump with the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize. This honor was created specifically for Trump after he was overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize in October, despite a highly publicized campaign to secure it.
FIFA's use of the Kennedy Center for the 2026 World Cup Draw later this month is understood to be free of charge.
But here's where it gets controversial: Is this a clever political move or an unintentional blunder? And what does this mean for the future of the Kennedy Center's artistic and cultural identity? Join the discussion and share your thoughts in the comments!
