The US government is in shutdown mode again, and this time it's a battle over immigration.
The US government has partially shut down, with Congress failing to reach an agreement on funding. This is the third shutdown since Trump's re-election, and while it's not as severe as the 43-day closure last year, it still has the potential to cause significant disruptions.
So, what's the issue this time around?
It all boils down to funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Congress passed most of the necessary appropriations bills earlier this year, but funding for DHS was left out due to a disagreement between Democrats and Republicans.
Democrats are refusing to fund DHS until specific changes are made to how Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operates. The party is demanding reforms in response to the tragic killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota, which they attribute to Trump's immigration crackdown.
But here's where it gets controversial: ICE won't actually shut down, despite having its annual funds blocked. That's because of a massive funding boost from the "One Big Beautiful Bill" passed last year, which provided ICE with a whopping $75 billion - more than seven times its usual budget!
Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), which supports ICE operations, also received a significant injection of funds.
Republican Congressman Mark Amodei claims that "those agencies' missions will be largely unaffected by a shutdown." But is that really the case?
The funding lapse will impact other agencies within DHS. Vice Admiral Thomas Allan from the US Coast Guard warns that a prolonged shutdown would delay pay for thousands of personnel and disrupt training, affecting mission readiness.
Gregg Phillips from FEMA highlights the strain on their disaster relief fund, especially if a catastrophic event were to occur.
And this is the part most people miss: the shutdown's impact on travel and the economy. The travel industry is concerned about funds running out for the Transportation Security Agency (TSA), which handles airport screening and security. TSA staff, already reeling from the last shutdown, are worried about delayed paychecks and the potential for increased sick calls, leading to longer wait times and flight cancellations.
So, what are Democrats demanding? They've presented a list of 10 requirements, including warrants for entering private properties, no face masks for agents, and an end to racial profiling. They also want body cameras for agents, which Republicans have agreed to.
Negotiations are ongoing, with the White House heavily involved. The latest Republican offer has been called "unserious" by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who says it omits key requirements like warrants.
When will this shutdown end? It's hard to say. Congress is currently on a break, and many members have left Washington, indicating that a deal is not imminent. They're not due back until February 23rd, but could be called back sooner if an agreement is reached.
